How to set up rank tracking the right way

Choose the right keywords, set an accurate location, and read the movement that actually matters.

Start with keywords you can act on

Track the terms that map to real pages and real intent, not a giant undifferentiated list. A focused set of a few hundred keywords tied to specific pages gives you signal you can respond to, where thousands of vanity terms mostly add noise.

Set the location and language precisely

Rankings vary by country, city, and language. Configure each project with the market you actually compete in so the positions you see match what your customers see. A generic national check can hide big local swings.

Read movement, not just position

A single position is a snapshot. Trends over weeks tell the story: steady climbs, sudden drops after an update, or pages trading places. Prioritize keywords that moved, and check whether the ranking URL changed underneath them.
